Abstract

The usage of human anatomical parts for the teaching of anatomy is filled with various issues of moral, legal and social aspects, which often leads to a restriction regarding the renewal of parts for the teaching and research justified by the difficulty in obtaining this material. Thus, studies should be conducted to seek an alternative to this difficulty this study is based on knowledge of comparative anatomy and evolution of species in order to formulate an educational model that supports the teaching of human neuroanatomy. This report describes the behavior and distribution of middle cerebral artery Ovis Aries (Mammalia, Artiodactyla), establishing equivalence with the human brain and demonstrate that this model can be exploited as a method of training in the practice of neurosurgery microdissection. Four cerebral hemispheres were used from sheep (Ovis Aries) whose acquisition was done through donations from the local meatpacking industry, for they have no usage in the production line. They had the common carotid artery to the left or right accessed with the aid of a cannula and a 20 mL syringe and injected water, several times at room temperature (about 25 °C) with the purpose of washing the vascular system. Subsequently, we injected a solution of 15% formalin for tissue fixation and, soon after, latex solution with red pigment (Neoprene® and 650® Suvinil Dye 2350-0003) until it goes further by homologous artery. We then do an opening in the dorsal wall of the cranium, the part is then dipped in 10% formalin for a period of 72 hours for a better grip. Once removed from the brain with a spinal cord segment, we performed the dissection of the meninges (dura and arachnoid) and arteries of interest, in our case, the middle cerebral arteries and their main branches. After this process records were taken by means of photographs, drawings and schematics of microdissections with documentation purposes. Thus it was possible to describe the origin, course, division and distribution of middle cerebral artery in Ovis Aries and establish equivalence with the human brain. We conclude that it is possible to use the sheep’s brain, having as parameter the equivalent human brain as a model in education, both as neuroanatomy and in training techniques for neurosurgery, according to the ethical implications of legal and cultural connection with the use of human body parts.
