Abstract

Introduction: the present work was developed during the theoretical and practical classes of Human Anatomy for students of the clinical analysis technical course of the Technical School of Health of the Federal University of Uberlandia in 2009 and 2010. Conceptual Maps Theory created by Joseph Donald in 1970 who accomplished the cognitive development in children in the teaching and learning process based on Significant Learning Theory of David Ausubel (Moreira, 1983) who postulates that previous knowledge of the student is the most important factor for the learning of meanings. These activities have a positive focus simultaneously to the students that builds them knowledge collectively, in this way the main objective of this work was to demonstrate that this didactic resource is a important tool in the learning verification, to verify the abilities and competences of the students to create and to correlate to the anatomical concepts studied and to identify the possible conceptual mistakes presented in them cognitive structures. Material and Results: Two formal evaluation tests were performed before and after the building conceptual maps about the joint system anatomy to verify the learning. Regarding to the evaluation test performed, the index of success of the questions before the construction of conceptual maps by the students were 65% and 72% respectively, and the index of success after the construction of conceptual maps were 82% and 84% respectively to 2009 and 2010. Conclusions: The conceptual maps construction by students of the technical course in clinical analysis revealed to be an important evaluation tool about the development of the concepts presented. In spite of the difficulties in the analysis of the conceptual maps due to the absence of the subjectivity and objective criteria, this educative tool presented a great efficacy when it was developed in small groups of students, and the qualitative approach of this analysis privileged the particularities of each cognitive pathway. This theory is in agreement with the constructive pedagogic principles. Thus, the conceptual maps functioned as a facilitator of learning, allowing students to acquire the necessary abilities to build their own knowledge.
